Depreciation is usually the biggest invisible cost

Most people notice the monthly payment and fuel bill. Depreciation is less visible because no invoice arrives for it, but it can be one of the largest ownership costs, especially in the first years of a new luxury vehicle.

If you change vehicles frequently, depreciation should be part of the decision. If you keep a vehicle for many years, the cost is spread over a longer ownership period.

Insurance can vary dramatically

Insurance depends on driver history, location, coverage limits, deductible, model, trim and even where the vehicle is parked. Two owners with the same Range Rover can have very different premiums.

Get an insurance quote using the actual VIN before signing if the monthly budget is important. It takes a few minutes and removes a major unknown.

Tires and brakes are luxury-SUV expenses

Large wheels, high-performance tires and a heavy vehicle can make tire and brake replacement meaningful expenses. The exact cost depends on wheel size, tire choice and driving style.

On a used vehicle, inspect remaining tire tread and brake life. A vehicle that appears cheaper can lose that advantage quickly if it needs a full set of tires and brakes immediately.

Maintenance and repairs depend heavily on age

A new or certified vehicle and an older out-of-warranty vehicle are different ownership propositions. As a vehicle ages, it is reasonable to maintain a larger repair reserve even if the purchase price is lower.

Service history matters because deferred maintenance tends to become the next owner's problem. The lowest-priced used vehicle is not automatically the lowest-cost one to own.

Build your own ownership estimate

Take your expected payment or cash cost, then add a real insurance quote, estimated annual mileage and fuel, routine service, tire and brake reserve, registration and a repair reserve appropriate to the vehicle's age and warranty status.

That personal estimate will be more useful than a generic internet number because it reflects your driving, your insurance and the exact vehicle you are considering.

COMMON BUYING QUESTIONS

FAQ

Are Range Rovers expensive to maintain?

They are luxury vehicles, so maintenance, tires, brakes and repairs can cost more than on a mainstream compact SUV. Age, model, equipment and maintenance history make a big difference.

Is buying used cheaper overall?

The purchase price may be lower, but an older vehicle can require more maintenance and repairs. Compare total ownership costs, not just acquisition price.

How can I estimate my real cost before buying?

Use the exact VIN to get an insurance quote, inspect tire and brake condition, review service history and build a budget around your actual annual mileage.
